The Top Ocean Conservation Organizations To Follow

In celebration of World Oceans Day today, I thought I would share my go-to organizations that I refer to and follow for the latest ocean education content. These companies not only provide information but are actively doing their part to make a difference. Keep reading to learn about the top ocean conservation organizations to follow.

What exactly is ocean conservation? The areas of which it pertains to is… keeping our beaches and ocean clean, implementing sustainable fishing practices, protecting marine life, preserving coral reefs, regulating beach access and preservation, advocate for plastic reduction, and sustaining marine and coastal ecosystems, and so much more.

Oceana

Oceana is one of the top leaders in the ocean conservation in the world. They are dedicated to protecting and restoring the oceans on a global scale. Founded in 2001, they have won 225 victories, and have protected more than 4.5 million square miles of ocean. Oceana’s platform is not only informative but inspiring. Ocean Conservancy

Ocean Conservancy strives towards protecting the ocean from today’s challenges and create solutions every day. Having been around for over 40 years, Ocean Conservancy has hundreds of thousands of volunteers all over the world working with policy makers and people in the community to implement permanent changes to better our oceans.

Surfrider Foundation

The Surfrider Foundation might be one of the more well known organizations due to its active community involvement and has been around since 1984. They work to protect and serve the oceans, waves, and beaches. With the headquarters here in Southern California, they are have 190 chapters all around the globe. There biggest chapter is right here in San Diego! Check out the foundation and see if there is a chapter near you!

PADI Aware Foundation

The Professional Association of Diving Instructors, PADI, has multiple campaigns that are working on achieving balance between humanity and the ocean. They have protected over two dozen shark and ray species, removed 2 million pieces of debris from the ocean, helped with 222,000 conservation actions, and have a major role in groundbreaking citizen science.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Most known for the large ships that patrol the waters in search of illegal and undocumented fishing activity, the Sea Shepherd Conservation’s mission is to protect and conserve the oceans and marine life. They provide at sea resources to assist and support coastal governments in the protection of their waters against illegal fishing. They have some amazing success stories about life out at sea on their website, definitely check them out.
